I've talked to lots of people here in the Gloucester County, NJ, area about bankruptcy over the past 20 years, and none of them has wanted to be in my office; they would rather be anywhere else. They feel uncomfortable, ashamed, even a failure. One client once told me that she hired me because "I did not judge her" when we first met.
Your Reason for Filing is Most Likely Beyond Your Control
Well, I am here to tell you right now that there is no reason you should feel that way. If bankruptcy is the best thing for your financial future, then there is no reason you should not do it. Also, the cause for filing is most often beyond your control.
If you don't believe me, consider three of the top reasons why people file bankruptcy:
- Job loss or reduction of income
- Catastrophic medical bills
- Injury or disability that prevents you from working
If any of these sound familiar, ask yourself this: Is what happened your fault? Could you have prevented it? Was it beyond your control? Chances are, the answer is, "Yes."
If so, then why are you feeling bad about yourself? Why are you ashamed? You didn't do anything wrong!
The Key is Acceptance!
The key here is to accept the fact that what happened to you was beyond your control, unpreventable, and thus not your fault. To the contrary, you probably did everything you could to recover before you ever considered bankruptcy.
Give yourself permission to accept the reality that there is nothing you could have done, and that bankruptcy may be the best thing you CAN do to straighten out your financial future.
