GPS devices have more and more become a part of our everyday lives. Whether you use a Garmin, Tom Tom, or your smartphone with Google Maps, figuring out how to get to your destination has become a whole lot easier.

Unfortunately, these devices have also contributed to distracted driving in this country as people are watching the road on their GPS (or worse, their phone) more than the one through their windshield.

Too many people drive with one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding their GPS and phone, glancing down (and away from the road) to check and see when their next turn is coming up.

Being More Responsible with Technology

These gadgets need to be used more responsibly if we are going to reduce the risks of accidents on the road. Mount them on the dashboard (not the windshield, which is illegal in New Jersey) in a spot easily seen through your peripheral vision.

Keeping Technology From Being a Distraction

The biggest thing you can do? Enable the turn by turn directions feature! Having someone speak the directions to you will help you avoid checking the screen constantly to see where you are and where you need to be next.

It's like having your spouse (or a friend) in the passenger seat telling you where to go. I know the voice can be annoying at times, and can even seem a nag when you think you know a better route than she does, but it is something you need to do!

As life continues to get more complicated and as we continue to innovate, there will be more distractions on the road. It is our responsibility to avoid these distractions, and if we cannot, do whatever we can to reduce the risks that they present.

Use your common sense when you get behind the wheel and you, your passengers, and everyone with whom you share the road, will be safer for it!
