Drivers throughout New Jersey who ran a red light after June 19 might be getting a nasty surprise in the mail; the NJ Department of Transportation has green-lighted the red light cameras throughout the state after having tested them for accuracy. There had been a concern (and class action law suits) about whether the duration of the yellow lights had been set for the proper time (1 second for every 10mph speed of the prevailing traffic).

Of particular concern in the litigation were cameras here in the South Jersey towns of Monroe, Glassboro, and Cherry Hill. However, these cameras have caught 125,000 drivers and generated $9.5 million in fines since first being installed in 2010. This has raised some question in the public mind as to whether the main purpose of these cameras was to make the roads safer or generate revenue.

The story does not end here, however. State Senator Michael Doherty (R., Warren-Hunterdon) has sponsored a bill to ban the cameras. The Philadelphia Inquirer has quoted him as saying, "The certification of the 63 red-light cameras in question does nothing to address the propriety of the program as a whole."  In the meantime, South Jersey motorists should be cognizant of the cameras at these locations:

  • Cherry Hill: Rte. 70 and Springdale Rd.
  • Stratford: Rte. 30 & White Horse/Berlin Rd.
  • Gloucester Twp.: 4 Locations on Blackwood-Clementon Rd.
  • Deptford: Rte. 41 & Deptford Center Rd.
  • Glassboro: Rte. 47 & Dalton Drive
  • Monroe: Rte. 42 & Rte. 322/Sicklerville Rd.

If you have received a ticket for running a light at any of these intersections, or for failing to come to a complete stop before making a right turn on red, call my office at 856-432-4113 or contact me through this site to schedule an appointment to discuss your options.
