As I have written on this site, out-of-state drivers can think they are getting a good deal on a speeding ticket in New Jersey traffic court only to get home and find out that their state has a much harsher punishent. This was avoided recently when I represented a Delaware driver in a local traffic court when she received a ticket for going 73 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Under New Jersey law, that carries 4 points. However, if she had simply pled to the ticket, she would have returned home to 5 points and a possible license suspension! Fortunately, I was able to get the prosecutor to agree to let her pleas guilty to driving 54 mph in a 45 mph zone. In this way she was able to get only two points back home and no suspension.
